This is a topic of discussion on Grantland pretty often (especially recently with BB ending), and I was curious to find out what people here thought were the best shows of all time.

For me, I think there are only a few shows that I would consider near perfect, and those are:

GOAT Tier
The Wire
The Sopranos

Seinfeld
Spaced

Following that?

Pretty Damn Good Tier
Boardwalk Empire
The Shield
Breaking Bad
Six Feet Under
Friday Night Lights
Twin Peaks
Mad Men
Deadwood

Arrested Development
Frasier
Freaks and Geeks
Up to S9 of the Simpsons
MST3K
Futurama
Blackadder

Good Tier
Early Dexter
Game of Thrones
OZ
LOST
Band of Brothers (does it count?)

Friends

I haven't seem some shows people would list high up (Curb Your Enthusiasm and Treme immediately come to mind), so if I don't have something listed, it may just be that I haven't seen it (or I forgot to list it).

It's funny how people make a thing out of ranking TV shows now like its gospel. Was this going on pre-internet?

Its probably because The Wire is the best show ever.

I'm sad to see no British shows on there.

Here is my list (not sure which are GOAT tier and which are just really good but still) of British shows you should watch.

Comedy:
Spaced (Definitely GOAT tier)
Peep show
Father Ted
The Mighty Boosh
Red Dwarf (Series 1-6 mainly)
Blackadder (Series 2-4)
The Young ones
The Office
I'm Alan Partridge
The thick of it (Written by Armando Ianucci who also did In the loop and Veep)
The Royle family
A touch of cloth
Black books
Green wing
Monty Python's flying circus

Drama/Documentaries:
State of play
Any of the Up shows ie 7up, 14up, 21up etc (Documentaries but great viewing)
Black mirror

As you can see I haven't watched many dramas but we have loads of really good ones. Here's a list of shows listed by the BFI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BFI_TV_100

I've got to separate drama from comedy. Because while I have GOAT level comedies, I can't stack them against pantheon dramas like the Wire. Also, I'm not cheating and selecting specific seasons. That's not fair. For instance, if Dexter ended after season 3 or maybe 4, I'd have it on this list. But the end of that series just completely devalued the show overall, so it's not on the list. Also, I'm counting Band of Brothers because at 10+ hours it's nearly the same length of one-and-done shows like Freaks and Geeks. Asterisks indicate that the show has not ended and therefore could move up or down a level.

An argument can be made for some shows as to whether they are a strict drama or a comedy (Entourage, Shameless, Weeds and Orange is the New Black spring to mind). I put them where I feel they should go.

I feel like I'm missing shows...

I'm sad to see no British shows on there.Fear not. Right when I saw what the thread was about I was like "All right! Finally, a chance to mention the best TV show ever made by far, period, end of story...Connections by James Burke.
Then, I saw that none of their lists were valid as Garth Marenghi's Darkplace appeared nowhere.

At least I didn't see Gilmore Girls.

Also, I've got the balls not to divide up the genres, or include shit like "worth a watch" in the "pantheon".
If we were doing "Worth a Watch" I'd include Gidget and Hee Haw.

Connections by James Burke

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

The Office (U.S.)

Twin Peaks

SCTV

Super Jail

Look Around You

The Simpsons

Seinfeld

Parks and Recreation

The Walking Dead

Roseanne

Star Trek

M.A.S.H.

South Park

The Golden Girls

Good Neighbors (That's "The Good Life" to the Britainians)

Frasier

Futurama

Bob Newhart

Mr. Roger's Neighborhood

Survivors (remake)

Space:1999

The Prisoner

The snob in me hates to put this, but it's true god damn it, I can't believe it, but it's true: Everybody Loves Raymond :(

"Vulva Statue" Episode,
Obsessive Compulsive Touching of Food To Chin While Eating and Sensible Explanation for It
"Dinner Date With Woman Who Eats a Fly Because She Worships Frogs" Episode.... the cast, Chris Elliot,
...It's true.
I'm sorry.

Also, you're a racist if you don't pick The Cosby Show, Everybody Hates Chris, Good Times or Martin. :(
I would like to pick My Wife & Kids, but the show was too schizophrenic, fluttering between genius and fucking retarded Married With Children humor. :(
The writers must have done drugs before a few brainstorms...or they fired the one smart writer, then made up and had him come back but they got into another fight and fired him immediately after that.

Full House was the least greatest show I've ever seen.

I lost count how many times I wanted to drop kick uncle joey. He was nothing more than a pet to the tanners. When the show first started he lived under the stairs.. Did he even have a bed?? He just slept there behind the couch in that huge house. They didn't even give him the respect to give him the attic or even the garage.

Then they moved him into the basement like some gargoyle who's only job was to make the children laugh with his awful impressions and brain dead jokes.

Even the children didn't respect him as a human being, like that time DJ cut school to get someone's autograph she lied to this poor sack Joey and when he confronted her she brushed him off. Just kicked his balls in and said "you live in my house".

I won't even get into what Uncle Jessie did to this poor fool. :faint:

I didn't.

The Pantheon shows are only listed in beneath the words PANTHEON, ya big dummy. I just chose to rank other shows on down the pyramid, ala Bill Simmon's NBA Hall of Fame rankings, which this thread was based on.

How is Cosby Show a guilty pleasure?

White guilt?I could only relate to Roseanne, overweight parents with a Godzilla on display, both working hard all day at lame jobs, food service, housekeeping, grocery store, barely finding time to deal with the stupidity of brainless bureaucrats at school, wearing black and moping in your bedroom, family of drunks and fuck-ups, getting the power shut off 'cause you didn't have enough money to pay the bills, getting excited about government cheese and late night Horror TV...

Could not relate to an obstetrician and an attorney who live in a giant house in New York who are friends with Dizzy Gillespie and Stevie Wonder, sending all their kids to college.

I guess that's just my privilege talking.

bill cosby is a fruad, supporting his show is supporting fraud.

if there's guilt to be thrown around, it's guilt in being bamboozled, flimflammed.
